Get the Mow How
With Laura Tobin

As spring weather finally sweeps in, getting our gardens looking great for the warmer months climbs up the priority list. Honda knows that having a nicely kept lawn isn’t just about the aesthetic. It’s an extension of your home – your ‘room outside’.
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, understanding climate and the role it plays is key to success. To help you navigate the unpredictable British weather, Honda has teamed up with Laura Tobin, one of the nation’s best-loved TV Broadcast Meteorologists. Our five part series will be packed full of useful weather information and gardening guidance from experts across the country.

Welcome to Part Two of ‘Get The Mow How’, we will be visiting the beautiful Borde Hill Garden, West Sussex. Created in the early 1900s, the garden is home to a unique collection of flora and fauna from the Great Plant Hunters’ expeditions. The 35 acre, botanically rich garden is set within 200 acres of park and woodland, and requires a considerable level of care. Head Gardener Andy Stevens is the man for the job. He describes gardening as a lifelong passion and has spent the last 12 years of his career at Borde Hill tending to its needs.

Andy and Laura also discuss the ‘unusual’ April weather, one of the coldest ever recorded, and the challenges experts have faced with little rain, freezing night-time temperatures and snow showers. While we would usually be out with our mowers in late March, the exceptional conditions have meant that our lawns have not grown at their usual rate resulting in the grass-cutting season running a little later than usual.

In this episode, Andy also talks about what we should be doing to get our gardens in tip-top shape, with a little bit of help from the Honda HRX476 QY lawnmower. Thanks to the mower’s five adjustable cutting heights and 73 litre collection bag, the team at Borde Hill are able to deliver precise results. Find out which setting you should be using at this time of year, the percentage of grass to trim off, and what to do with your clippings. Andy will be sharing his experience with the HRX476 QY mower, a favourite of professionals and enthusiasts alike, including how he gets those signature lawn stripes with the large rear roller.

Now, back to the weather...and what we can (hope to) expect. During the episode, Laura tells us ‘ne cast a clout til May is out’ meaning you can still get frost until the end of May – so resist the urge to run to the garden centre for those summer bedding plants for a little longer! The pair will also be delving deeper into the ‘Science of Grass’ and the four factors that influence it.
