10 KID-FRIENDLY THINGS TO DO
ON LONG CAR JOURNEYS

(and what to pack)

School's out, out-of-office is on, bags are packed, location is set, and it’s time to head out – but how will you keep the family entertained on the drive?

We’ve broken down 10 family-friendly things to do on a long car journey – and what to pack for a peaceful trip.

What to do on a long car journey

1. Download shows
and movies

Whether you have seat-back screens for in-car movies, or your children have tablets, download their favourite content before the trip.

Games, movies, apps and audio books are all handy ways to kill a few hours. Install these on your children’s devices – make sure you do this the night before to avoid using all of your mobile data streaming them on the day.

2. Road trip bingo

We all know the game ‘I spy’, but why not mix it up and play road trip bingo?

Make a card with sights from the road, with points for the first person to get a line or full house. Pick elements you’ll see or hear on the journey, like different coloured cars, hearing someone beep their horn, spotting a dog in a car or types of animals in a field.

Heighten the stakes with a few simple prizes, like treats or snacks.

3. Time to draw

Whether you trust them with colouring pencils and a pad or want to get them the special water pens that don’t leave a mark, peering out of the window on a car journey can spark creativity.

Drawing can occupy your little ones for a long time, or tire them out for a nap.

4. Route stops

Planning stops is a great way to break up the trip. It gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs and visit the toilet if needed – and pick up extra snacks, coffee or water at a service station.

Try to plan these in advance so you’re not driving for long periods without a break.

5. The word association game

This doesn’t require any props, just quick thinking.

An adult will start the game off by saying any word, you’ll then move around the car with each person saying a different word associated to the last, eg: Tree – outside – garden – sunshine – weather – winter – snow – Christmas.

The person who can’t think of an associated word within five seconds loses, and must pick the next word.

6. Guess the film

Make a playlist filled with different songs from films and TV shows. When a familiar theme tune comes on, see how quickly they can guess.

Chalk up the points to see who’s won by the time you arrive.

7. Who's next door?

Stuck in traffic? We’ve all been there. This is where the game “who’s next door” can help.

Everyone quickly looks out of their window to see who is next to them (look away again, you don’t want them to catch you staring). Once you’ve seen who your neighbour is, think of a backstory for them. Give them a fun name, silly voice and decide their destination.

8. Games consoles

Games consoles have been used to pass the time at home for years. Now we have far more advanced consoles which feature a range of fun and educational problem-solving games – which can be used outside the house.

The Nintendo Switch is the most popular hand-held console at the moment, but there are plenty of more affordable, older models that would do the job on a long trip.

9. Countdown goodie bags

If you plan on making a few stops along the way, or driving through a few different towns or cities, try bringing a goodie bag for when you drive through each spot.

For example, the first one could be given as you set off with a healthy snack and activity pack, the second one could be a book with a drink, the third could be a game to play on the last leg of the journey.

This can keep little hands occupied for longer, as their activity changes over time.

10. Photo shoot

Wherever you’re travelling to, you don’t want to forget your camera.

Give a disposable or instant camera to your children in the back to capture their favourite passing farm animals, clouds and views.

What to pack for your car journey

1. Snacks

An essential for every trip, snacks and treats can keep spirits up on a long journey.

Use a box with separators inside, then fill each compartment with a tasty snack, such as fruit, crisps, biscuits and sweets. This can keep your car neat and tidy and means less stopping for takeaways at service stations.

2. A pillow and blanket

If you’re going on a long trip and plan on setting off in the early hours, or driving through the night, chances are your children will want to have a snooze.

Pack a travel pillow and a small blanket so they can get nice and comfortable.

3. The essentials

As well making sure your children have plenty to do to keep them entertained, you also want to ensure you have the essentials packed.

Don’t forget:
* Anti-sickness medication/bands
* Wipes (for sticky hands)
* Water
* Sun cream
* Spare comfy clothes
