Maintaining your outboard

As a boat owner, you should pride yourself on knowing your boat inside and out and maintaining the exterior as well as the engine. If you stay on top of your boat maintenance, and keep each and every part running smoothly, your boat will reward you with years of unforgettable memories. The great news is, it's easier than you might think to keep your vessel in pristine condition. We’ll share our maintenance must - dos and help you tick every last box.

1. Get to know your engine

Your owner's manual is packed full of useful information to help you understand how, when, and why your engine needs servicing. A thorough read through over a cuppa, and you should have all the confidence, and technical know-how you need to keep your engine well maintained and take care of any problems before they arise. The truth is most issues can be avoided all together by simply ensuring your engine is serviced at the right time. To make the most of your Honda warranty, it’s important to stick closely to the service schedule and keep your service record updated each time.

2. Carry out regular checks

You should be able to spot hints of wear and tear on your engine by regularly inspecting the exterior. Take time to check over your motor ensuring your battery is charged, all fluid levels are topped up, spark plugs are working properly, and water passages are free of blockages.

You might find some slight cracking, a small patch of corrosion or maybe a loose bolt, that can be taken care of before any further damage is caused. Remember to replace your propellor if it has significant wear or any breaks or bumps emerge, it should be well fitted and in good working condition at all times. Honda parts offer the very best in quality and reliability, ensure any replacements are genuine to enjoy the most longevity from your engine.

3. Flush the saltwater

Saltwater build-up can be incredibly damaging to your engine. To ensure your motor runs as smoothly as possible, for as long as possible, remember to wash, wax, and regularly flush your outboard engine with clean water. You'll need to run a flushing adapter for around 5 minutes after each saltwater outing to rid your motor of corrosive dirt and debris.

Every Honda outboard engine has the benefit of our anti-corrosion technology. Four layers of defensive casing designed to protect your motor from the harsh effects of saltwater. We take anodised aluminium, coat it with an epoxy primer, paint it with silver shimmer and protect it with a clear resin topcoat all finished with our patented double-seal.

4. Keep your fuel system clean

What you put into your engine has a big impact on what you’ll get out of it. Honda recommend replacing your fuel filter after 400 hours on the water, or after 2 years of use, whichever comes along first. But, before you hit this deadline, it’s important to check and clear-out your fuel filter on a regular basis, and always aim to use a manufacture-approved fuel that is both clean and of a high quality – just what your engine deserves.

5. Get winter ready

There are ways to prepare your outboard engine for a cold winter, so if you expect a drop in temperatures, take a look at the manufacturer’s manual to find out exactly which steps you should follow. Your local Honda Marine dealer should also be able to advise you on the best way to protect your engine in frosty conditions. You may need to stabilise your fuel supply or flush the cooling system, methods of winterisation that will ensure your engine runs smoothly when the seasons change.

6. See a professional

No one knows your motor better than the dealer you bought it from. So, whilst there are many ways you can care for your engine yourself, it is always worth investing in a professional service from time to time. Honda Marine Authorised Dealers have the knowledge, experience, and specialist tools to undertake an expert service, diagnose any issues and carry out a trusted repair if needed.
