What is a hybrid car?
A hybrid vehicle gets its power from two sources – an electric battery and an internal combustion engine. These can either work together, or on their own, delivering smooth power and exhilarating performance.
Powered by Honda’s own hybrid technology, our full hybrid cars can seamlessly alternate between different power sources to provide the most efficient performance, whatever be the condition.
Living with a Honda hybrid
Elite performance
Our unique Honda e:HEV powertrain system has proven itself more efficient than competitors’ both mild hybrid and plug-in systems.
In testing across a variety of road types and traffic levels, the e:HEV powertrain matched the best performance elements of other hybrid systems, while offering higher levels of real-world efficiency.^^
Advanced powertrain
The Honda e:HEV full hybrid powertrain can outperform mild hybrid competitors on public roads. The advanced powertrain, despite being heavier than many in-class rivals, offers improved efficiency over mild hybrids.
Under test conditions, our full hybrid car delivers greatly improved fuel efficiency compared to a lighter mild hybrid powered by a 48V mild hybrid system.^^
Low emissions
The Honda e:HEV powertrain offers three drive modes, which interchange seamlessly, matching road and driving conditions to ensure optimal performance.
Our intelligent Electronic Control Unit will cycle between Electric Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive mode to find the optimal fuel-efficiency.
In urban settings (driving up to 25 mph) the e:HEV system will spend up to 91% of time in Electric Drive mode with zero emissions.^^
New e:PHEV Plug-in powertrain
The CR-V plug-in hybrid comes with our e:PHEV powertrain. Select EV mode and the e:PHEV can deliver a pure electric emission free driving range of 50 miles. The efficient powertrain has a weighted combined fuel economy of 0.8litres per 100km and CO2 emissions starting at an ultra-low 18g/km^ when the battery is charged.
When the electric range has depleted, with no option to charge, the e:PHEV will still perform efficiently, delivering fuel economy similar to the full hybrid model.

Honda Hybrid technology explained
All our hybrids are powered by Honda's acclaimed e:HEV full hybrid powertrain, designed to increase fuel efficiency without compromising performance.
It's made up of high-tech electric motors, a compact and high-capacity battery, and a fuel-efficient petrol engine.
Electric drive
Drawing power solely from the battery, delivering an instant response and EV-like silence.
Hybrid drive
The engine is powering the generator motor that drives the car. Great performance, low emissions and long range are the hallmarks of hybrid drive.
Engine drive
Directly powered by a highly efficient petrol engine during sustained driving.
Honda hybrid cars: FAQs
What happens if my hybrid car battery dies?
If your hybrid car battery dies, it'll need to be replaced or the car won't work properly. If you notice the car losing its efficiency or struggling to hold a charge, contact your nearest retailer as soon as possible to arrange a battery change.
How are hybrid car batteries disposed of?
All Honda batteries from electric and hybrid vehicles are recycled through the expanded sustainability partnership with SNAM.
End-life-batteries will either be recycled for ‘second-life’ renewable energy storage uses or for their extractable valuable materials, such as lithium and cobalt.
Is it worth buying a hybrid car?
A hybrid car is more fuel efficient and cost effective than a petrol vehicle. As the world quickly moves towards an electric future, a hybrid car is also a perfect green alternative to the traditional petrol engine, while simultaneously giving you far less range anxiety than an electric vehicle.
Do hybrids last longer?
Due to the combination of a petrol engine and battery power, there's less wear and tear on a hybrid car's engine. Regenerative braking also reduces the wear on brakes, which lowers the need for maintenance, meaning your hybrid car may last longer than a petrol or diesel equivalent.
