Gold Wing now has an unmistakable presence as a long-distance tourer. The first-generation Gold Wing (GL1000), however was designed as a supersport model, due to the popularity of supersport models in Japan, Europe, and the United States, and the fierce competition among manufacturers in this genre.

The second-generation model on the path to long distance tourer with bigger engine. In 1980, five years after the first Gold Wing (GL1000) was launched in 1975, the Gold Wing (GL1100) was launched with a larger displacement engine and remodeled design as a tourer.

The Gold Wing GL1100 established the series as a grand tourer in the U.S. The development team was not yet satisfied, aiming to design a tourer with more composure and comfort.

The GL1100 Gold Wing Interstate, launched in 1980, was a comfortable grand tourer featuring fairing, rear trunk, and saddlebags, and was highly popular in the United States, opening up a new market.

The newly developed engine was a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, horizontally opposed, 6-cylinder OHC engine similar to the GL1500, but with displacement increased to 1832 cc. Both maximum power and torque were significantly improved to provide an even more comfortable, powerful ride.

In September 2005, Honda announced that it had developed the world’s first airbag system for mass-produced motorcycles. At the same time, it also announced that the system would be available on the Gold Wing (GL1800) to be launched in the U.S. in 2006.

In 2025, to mark 50 years since the launch of the original Gold Wing, Honda launched the Gold Wing GL1800 50th Anniversary. An exclusive model packed with some unique aesthetic features marking 50 years since the launch of this iconic touring model.
